Two surgical robots at the service of patients

Hôtel-Dieu de France (HDF) and Saint Joseph University (USJ) proudly announce the signing of a groundbreaking agreement to introduce Lebanon’s first and latest generation Cambridge Medical Robotics (CMR) Versius® Surgical Robot system. This cutting-edge technology, provided by PROMEDZ in Lebanon, as the official representative of CMR Surgical (UK), positions HDF and USJ as regional pioneers in robotic surgery.

Known for its versatility, the system is set to be applied across several key specialties, including minimally invasive procedures in colorectal, urological, gynecological, thoracic, and general surgeries. This advanced approach enhances precision and reduces recovery times, benefiting both patients and healthcare providers, marking a new era of healthcare excellence in Lebanon.

“We are thrilled to lead the way in advanced surgical care by introducing the CMR Versius® system at our hospital. This robot will enhance the quality of care we provide to our patients, further solidifying our commitment to excellence in healthcare,” said Mr. Nassib Nasr, CEO of Hôtel-Dieu de France.

The project also extends to the academic sector through a collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine of Saint Joseph University, which will host a first of its kind dedicated animal lab training facility for robotic surgery in the region. This training hub will include an identical CMR Versius Surgical robot, separate from the hospital facility, and will serve not only Lebanese surgeons but also aspiring robotic surgeons from across the region.

“This initiative will establish Lebanon as a reference point for surgical robotics training,” emphasized Prof. Elie Nemer, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Saint Joseph University and Head of the Urology Department at Hôtel-Dieu de France. “It will allow surgeons to gain invaluable hands-on experience with the most advanced surgical technology available to enhance performance on the patient and ensure that it’s never the first time on the patient; The first surgeries with the robotic system at HDF were successfully conducted on prostate cancer patients during February”.

“PROMEDZ and CMR Surgical worked closely with HDF and USJ to ensure the seamless integration of the Versius® system. This includes comprehensive training and support for medical teams and the launch of the “Train the Trainer” program, further emphasizing Lebanon’s strong position in the region” said Mr. Hady Bsat, Chairman of PROMEDZ.

HDF visit to the President General Joseph Aoun

The President of the Lebanese Republic, General Joseph Aoun, received the Rector of Saint-Joseph University in Beirut, Professor Salim Daccache s.j., accompanied by a delegation from Hôtel-Dieu de France, a university hospital.

On this occasion, Reverend Father Professor Salim Daccache s.j., congratulated him on his election to the presidency and addressed the problems and challenges facing universities in Lebanon in general, and Saint-Joseph University in particular.

He expressed his gratitude for the appointment of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates as his representative at the inauguration of the new buildings of the Faculty of Medicine. The Minister of Energy and Water, Joe Sadi, also attended the meeting in his capacity as Chairman of the University's Board of Governors.

Professor Daccache made the resources of the University and Hôtel-Dieu de France available to the President of the Republic, with the aim of contributing to the success of the President's term of office and his efforts for the rebirth of Lebanon.

Professor Daccache delivered the following speech:

"Your Excellency,

We come before you today from Saint-Joseph University of Beirut and Hôtel-Dieu de France to offer our blessings and prayers for the success of your mission as President of the Republic. I recall when we first met at the presidential headquarters, the first words you shared with us were: 'We do not engage in politics, for it does not lead us to where we truly want to go,' and as always, you were right. For the most important thing is the love we hold for our country, the service we dedicate to our nation, and our unwavering commitment to the homeland, in its entirety. Your words reflect the wisdom of a true statesman, who places the well-being of the country above all else.

In our homeland, we have been shaped by values and principles that guide us, and no matter how far we may travel, it is always this land to which we return. We must all come together to serve it, especially in times of difficulty, with every ounce of strength we possess. And so, we offer you all that we have—our resources, our expertise, and our commitment—to serve society and contribute to the success of your mission, for your success is inherently tied to the success of our country in all its facets.

In the midst of the challenges and tragedies we have faced, both the University and Hôtel-Dieu de France Hospital, along with the hospitals in our network, have steadfastly continued to provide their services for the benefit of all, with a particular focus on the officers and soldiers of the Lebanese Army, without any distinction. Just yesterday, the new buildings of the Faculty of Medicine were inaugurated under your esteemed patronage. We are deeply grateful to you for entrusting Mr. Joe Raji, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, one of our distinguished alumni, to represent you on this significant occasion.

These buildings were erected amid bombardments, symbolizing not only the strength of our resolve but also the deep-rooted connection we have to this land. They stand as a testament to our unwavering commitment to anchor ourselves in Lebanon and to write a brighter future for all.

On behalf of the 4,000 employees of our institutions, we solemnly pledge to work together, hand in hand, for the betterment of our beloved country. Long live Your Excellency, and long live Lebanon!"

Response from President Aoun:

President Aoun warmly welcomed the delegation, commending the vital role played by Saint-Joseph University in shaping a promising generation of students across all fields of study. He emphasized that in the coming period, efforts will be intensified to foster conditions that will help stem the emigration of young Lebanese abroad, ensuring a brighter future for the nation.

The President also lauded the unwavering contributions of Hôtel-Dieu de France, which has continued to provide essential care even in the face of the nation’s most challenging times. He expressed profound gratitude for the sacrifices made by the medical staff, doctors, and nurses, who have shown immense dedication and resilience.

In a gesture of appreciation, Professor Daccache presented President Aoun with a Saint Joseph icon and a special commemorative medal from the university, marking its 150th anniversary. He also extended a warm invitation to the President to attend the grand ceremony scheduled for March 19th, celebrating this historic milestone.

33rd World Day of the Sick

33rd World Day of the Sick

On the occasion of the 33rd World Day of the Sick, Archbishop Paolo Borgia, Apostolic Nuncio to Lebanon, presided over the Mass on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at the N. and H. Obeigi Auditorium. The Mass was concelebrated by Professor Salim Daccache, S.J., Rector of Saint Joseph University, and the Secretary of the Nunciature, Archbishop Giovanni Picciari, in the presence of Father François Boëdec, Vice-Rector for Administration, chaplains of the Hospital Network, and the extended family of HDF.

In an atmosphere filled with gratitude, Professor Salim Daccache, S.J., began the Mass by warmly welcoming Archbishop Borgia and all those present. He highlighted the significance of this moment of blessing, which aims to honor the medical teams, nurses, and administrative staff. He wished for healing and inner peace for each patient, reaffirming the hospital's commitment to the health and well-being of its patients. He expressed his deep gratitude to all participants and prayed for the continued success of their mission, marked by devotion.

In his homily, Archbishop Borgia expressed his joy at being able to bring Pope Francis' blessing to all present, as the Holy Father had desired to attend the event in person. The Nuncio reminded those gathered that: “This day holds a dual meaning: on the one hand, it allows us to reaffirm the invaluable worth of human life, which must be protected under all circumstances; on the other hand, it highlights the attention the Church gives to illness and suffering, which lie at the heart of its spiritual, pastoral, and social missions.”

“Although suffering is inevitable in the lives of men and women, it can become a moment of great spiritual value, whether on a personal, familial, or social level. At times, it is also a testimony of courage, solidarity, and sharing, while respecting human dignity. The World Day of the Sick is celebrated on the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes, and it carries a message of hope, especially in the context of physical and spiritual suffering.” He continued: “The Holy Father invites each of us to reflect on God's closeness to those who suffer, for 'the kingdom of God is near you.' Pope Francis writes: 'The Risen One walks with us and becomes our companion on the journey.' He calls us to listen to His word, which enlightens our hearts. Therefore, we must learn to say, like Saint Paul: 'Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor the present, nor the future, nor powers, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God.'”

He invited all the faithful to pray together, asking the Lord to spread hope through the strength of His spirit. “Today, this celebration is an opportunity to pray for all the sick and healthcare workers, thanking God and asking for strength and courage to face adversity.”

At the end of the Mass, the Nuncio emphasized: “We must love the patients! Love works miracles far beyond what medicine can offer. Love is the true care of the heart, and every patient needs it. With this love, we can truly witness miracles.”

Finally, the General Directorate warmly welcomed the Apostolic Nuncio, expressing gratitude for his visit to the hospital.
