33rd World Day of the Sick

On the occasion of the 33rd World Day of the Sick, Archbishop Paolo Borgia, Apostolic Nuncio to Lebanon, presided over the Mass on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at the N. and H. Obeigi Auditorium. The Mass was concelebrated by Professor Salim Daccache, S.J., Rector of Saint Joseph University, and the Secretary of the Nunciature, Archbishop Giovanni Picciari, in the presence of Father François Boëdec, Vice-Rector for Administration, chaplains of the Hospital Network, and the extended family of HDF.
In an atmosphere filled with gratitude, Professor Salim Daccache, S.J., began the Mass by warmly welcoming Archbishop Borgia and all those present. He highlighted the significance of this moment of blessing, which aims to honor the medical teams, nurses, and administrative staff. He wished for healing and inner peace for each patient, reaffirming the hospital's commitment to the health and well-being of its patients. He expressed his deep gratitude to all participants and prayed for the continued success of their mission, marked by devotion.
In his homily, Archbishop Borgia expressed his joy at being able to bring Pope Francis' blessing to all present, as the Holy Father had desired to attend the event in person. The Nuncio reminded those gathered that: “This day holds a dual meaning: on the one hand, it allows us to reaffirm the invaluable worth of human life, which must be protected under all circumstances; on the other hand, it highlights the attention the Church gives to illness and suffering, which lie at the heart of its spiritual, pastoral, and social missions.”
“Although suffering is inevitable in the lives of men and women, it can become a moment of great spiritual value, whether on a personal, familial, or social level. At times, it is also a testimony of courage, solidarity, and sharing, while respecting human dignity. The World Day of the Sick is celebrated on the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes, and it carries a message of hope, especially in the context of physical and spiritual suffering.” He continued: “The Holy Father invites each of us to reflect on God's closeness to those who suffer, for 'the kingdom of God is near you.' Pope Francis writes: 'The Risen One walks with us and becomes our companion on the journey.' He calls us to listen to His word, which enlightens our hearts. Therefore, we must learn to say, like Saint Paul: 'Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor the present, nor the future, nor powers, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God.'”
He invited all the faithful to pray together, asking the Lord to spread hope through the strength of His spirit. “Today, this celebration is an opportunity to pray for all the sick and healthcare workers, thanking God and asking for strength and courage to face adversity.”
At the end of the Mass, the Nuncio emphasized: “We must love the patients! Love works miracles far beyond what medicine can offer. Love is the true care of the heart, and every patient needs it. With this love, we can truly witness miracles.”
Finally, the General Directorate warmly welcomed the Apostolic Nuncio, expressing gratitude for his visit to the hospital.
